CTA talks career opportunities at University Computing and Electronic Engineering Showcase
Corecom Technology Academy (CTA) had the pleasure of attending the Computing and Electronic Engineering showcase at Leeds Beckett University, where we had a look at the hard work students have put into some of their projects and to talk about career opportunities in the tech industry.
The day started with a speech from the Assistant Vice Chancellor who discussed the importance of building links between the University and local businesses; something we wholeheartedly support as we look to support businesses in growing their technology capability through diverse and inclusive talent.
The showcase was split into several rooms, with students providing summaries of their projects and answering questions. We quizzed the students on various topics including using metasploit for pen testing, their favourite programming language, using web services to collate public data, and deep learning models for data analysis.
The range of projects was really impressive, and it’s clear the students are learning relevant subjects to prepare them for the world of work. Amongst the highlights were:
1) A robotics project using Fischer Technik arms from Xuekun Li.
2) The output of a Pen Test from Charlie McCusker and Jack Smith with details of vulnerabilities identified, including everyone’s favourite – insecure passwords!
3) A covid-19 monitoring app that pulls data from public APIs and presents it in a nice usable interface, by Sidrah Hussain.
Thomas Crabtree, Academy Director, said:
“Having the opportunity to work with schools and universities is something we think is really important - it provides students with an opportunity to network with potential employers, get first hand industry insights, and for employers to speak to people looking for employment. There is also an important role to play in encouraging women and people from disadvantaged backgrounds to get into technology roles.
“It was fantastic to see some superb projects and lots of new talent soon to enter the industry.”
