Building Equitable Solutions to the Tech Talent Shortage
Author: Rick Hughes
The tech scene in Leeds and West Yorkshire is thriving, with a diverse range of companies pushing the boundaries in everything from cybersecurity to data analytics. However, a recent article in Leeds List posed a thought-provoking question: Are we doing enough to ensure that the pipeline of tech talent is truly diverse and accessible?
This question resonated deeply with me, as it’s the exact reason why Corecom Technology Academy was founded. ‘Be the change’ so the saying goes – well that’s what we’re trying to do!
Our Mission
Our mission at CTA is simple: to provide everyone, regardless of background or education level, with the opportunity to pursue a fulfilling career in technology. We know that a diverse tech industry is a stronger one, and that everyone deserves the chance to contribute their unique skills and perspectives. As the article highlights, Leeds has become a tech superhub, but there’s still a significant gap when it comes to engaging non-graduates and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. This is something we’re tackling head-on.
Diversity and Inclusion
At Corecom Technology Academy, we offer free, high-quality training programs that equip our Associates with the practical skills they need to succeed in today's competitive job market. We're proud to have helped over 50 individuals from all walks of life launch their tech careers, and we're committed to continuing our work to bridge the tech talent gap. The stats from our academy graduates back that up:
64% identifying as women
42% identifying as BAME
27% identifying as neurodiverse
Our Clients
We are proud to partner with some of Yorkshire and the UK’s top tech businesses to place our graduates in entry-level roles across Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Quality Engineering, Product & Cyber. We don’t just provide training – we provide equitable opportunities that help transform lives and bring a fresh, diverse perspective to the tech sector.
Career and Wellbeing Support
One of the things that sets Corecom Technology Academy apart is our emphasis on creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Our team of experienced mentors and instructors are dedicated to helping our students reach their full potential. We also prioritise pastoral care and provide a fantastic range of resources to support our Associates' personal and professional development.
As we continue to grow and expand, we're excited about the opportunity to make an even greater impact on the tech industry.
Let’s continue working together to bridge the digital divide and create a tech sector that reflects the rich diversity of talent we have right here in West Yorkshire and the UK.
